Art and Happiness

Silly Ass
You might wonder, "Why on Earth would people buy art at a scary time like this?" Good question!
My work has actually been selling well the last few weeks, which both thrills and puzzles me. Well, I've been musing on that, and discussing it with other art professionals and buyers. I have a couple of theories, both of which involve happiness.
The first is simple: My art has often been called "Happy art". The bright colors I use to bring the cute or often-humorous subjects to life will brighten a room and make people smile, day after day. That is one of my major goals as an artist. If you are stuck in your home, making it a more fun place to be is a great idea. A silly donkey might be just the ticket! A cute goat? Or maybe a strong, soulful buffalo. Staring at the same old walls gets boring. If you can afford it, buying things can feel therapeutic, but where are you going to wear those shoes, that new outfit? Besides, Jeff Bezos doesn't need your money . . .
Which leads in a way to the second part of my theory: It feels good to help other people. Small local businesses like galleries are struggling and can use the support, which helps restore the community. In his book The Art of Happiness, the Dalai Lama says that helping others is one of the best ways to add happiness in your own life. Love and compassion for others, combined with living in each moment, enjoying Nature and beauty, and gratitude for Life, creates a recipe for joy. So maybe it does make sense, assuming you have the resources. One purchase can make a lot of people happy, including yourself. Win-Win! I'd love to hear if you have other input on this question.
So in these challenging times, I encourage you to stay healthy while you enjoy Nature. Be gentle with her. Be kind to animals. Above all, be loving and compassionate with your fellow humans. Find beauty in EVERY day of your precious life.
